After the British Empire abolished slavery in its colonies in 1833, it created a system of indentured servitude, drawing labourers from India across the seas to work on sugar plantations. This video is about the story of these labourers. They were called "coolies", a term that carries a sting of disempowerment, even to this day for some--although many descendants of the indentured have sought to reclaim the term as a badge of honour that captures the courage and ingenuity shown by these Indians who turned adversity around and forged lasting communities around the world. "Girmitya" comes from "girmit", a mispronunciation of "agreement", which the indentured Indians ostensibly signed.
